A travel adapter lets your plug fit a foreign socket; a voltage converter changes the electricity itself. They solve different problems, and using the wrong one can damage your gear.
Adapter vs Converter
A plug adapter only changes the shape of the plug so it fits the wall socket. It does nothing to the voltage. A voltage converter (or transformer) steps the voltage up or down so a single-voltage appliance can run safely abroad.
Check Your Devices First
Before buying anything, read the small print on your charger. Most phone, tablet, and laptop chargers say INPUT 100-240 V, which means they are dual-voltage and need only a plug adapter anywhere in the world. Hairdryers, curling irons, and some electric toothbrushes are often single-voltage and may need a converter.
